A reader in Texas e-mailed me because she has about $187,000 worth of unopened injections of neupogen that she can't use.
Texas doesn't have a drug repository that would take this medicine and pass it on to someone who needs it, and she hates to see it go to waste, as do I.
Any ideas, readers?
Obviously, we can't break the law and put this stuff on eBay or Craigslist, so I am looking for legal ways to get these expensive drugs to someone who can use them.

Jeanne, I have linked to this on my blog and will mention it on Twitter and on my Mothers With Cancer mailing list.

Thanks, Laurie. It really would be a crime to have to throw all this away.

How'd she get so much?
We had a similar problem with a much, much smaller amount.
It brings home the point that even if the doctor writes the prescription for the maximum number of rounds he thinks he might give you, don't fill them all at once.
Treatment plans change, sometimes at the last minute. You can always ask the pharmacy to not issue all the amount the doctor specifies. TAP might moan and groan, but he won't take it back so you need to be proactive.
I'm about ready to toss ours because it's more than a year old. That's just plain wasteful and I wish there was a better way.

Hi MaryM--I don't know the details in this case, but sometimes people get too much because it is cheaper to order meds three months at a time ...
Do you have a drug repository near you? Or an oncology social worker who might pass yours on. I agree, it is just a shame to waste it.

My grandmothe can't afford the Neupogen injections and she is being kicked out of the hospital on Monday. I can't afford the $300 injection either. I would greatly appreciate the medications. Please contact me. Thank you in advance.

I ave had to change insurance companies and my Neupogen will not be covered till April 2010 due to pre-existing clause. I use it to moderate my white count while waiting for further treatment. If possible I could use 10 doses to hold me over.
Thanks
Bruce

Jeanne, does the reader from Texas have the expiration dates and the dosage? Does the vial have the Neupogen
label? My friend can really use some of them. Thanks for this and all the information you are sharing.
