I don't do well in the heat.
I never did, being a pale-skinned, freckled sort ... I could tell you tales of sunstroke and sunburn and, ultimately, melanoma ... but now that I'm on Tykerb (an oral drug used to treat metastatic breast cancer), I'm REALLY sensitive to the heat.
If I'm not careful, I get seriously dehydrated and have to go in to my cancer center for IV fluids--this is not fun. Trust me on that.
So I know that I have to take it easy and drink lots when it's hot. And it's been hot here in Seattle for the past week, which has really slowed me down.
To top it off, I'm trying to get ready to leave town--I'm heading to Nebraska on Wednesday to visit my good friend Teri (The Cheeky Librarian) and to attend the Cattlemen's Ball, a cancer fundraiser.
The event also exists to promote the eating of beef ... I'm not sure if I want to wade into the debates that I see on the horizon, or just coast along minding my own business ...
Anyway, I leave town the day after tomorrow, and, of course, I'm not ready. So consider this post my rant on the subject of heat and my own frailties. And then take a look at this great photo that my friend Monica shot of one of my bracelets. See: Wear Your Heart on Your Wrist
The bracelet will be for sale at the Cattlemen's Ball. I have a booth in the General Store which will be open on Saturday.
The bottom line on all of this: I'm leaving on a plane on Wednesday morning. Whatever doesn't get done, doesn't get done.
My sons are being great. Younger Son is biking home from college every day to walk my dog, Constant, and to water the garden. The strawberries may well be ripe when I get home, and they need lots of water. Ditto my vegetables: tomatoes, peas, lettuce, onions ... (Of course I'm paying him, but still...)
Older Son has been working at his new job for a week now, and he loves it. Just loves it. He gets up early and is CHEERFUL when he leaves the house, at about the time I am sipping my first cup of coffee in my jammies.
@ Jeanne Sather 2009.
Go Jeanne! Have a great time and I hope it's less hot there than on this coast. Probably not, but I'll hope it anyway. stay out of the heat as much as you can and drink lots of water. Good sales to you!
I tried to want the heart bracelet, but it's not me. It is beautiful You do such amazing work.

I am the same way about heat and for obvious reasons the summer sun isn't something I like coping with. Heat also aggravates lymphedema so I'm dragging my edema leg along. Well, enough of my whining on your blog but I wanted to let you know that I empathize. I hope you have great fun on your trip. Take care, Carver
