CancerMatch.com: Now If I REALLY Wanted to Shake Up Talk Radio ...
If I REALLY wanted to shake up Canadian talk radio, and maybe talk radio in the United States as well, I'd accept this offer of marriage from a 21-year-old student at the University of Toronto.
She (yes, SHE) writes:
I'm a 21-year-old student at the University of Toronto who happened to catch your story on the news. I've heard that you've received some negative feedback, which I just... I found it unbelievable.
The fact that your country doesn't have a universal health-care program when most every other industrialized nation in the world has seen to putting one together is completely inexcusable. The richest country in the world and people have to struggle to pay for health insurance? It's ludicrous.
As such, I'm offering my hand in marriage if it will help you receive treatment without having to declare bankruptcy. I'm sure, once you look at the photo I've attached, you will see that I am, in fact, of the female persuasion. Same sex marriage is perfectly legal in Ontario so I'd be more than willing to help you out. It's not my intention to act as a caretaker or anything like that. Just one person trying to do a good deed for another person. I know I don't live in BC or have cancer; I'm not even gay, actually. But, the offer stands if you're willing to take me up on it.
So, umm... yeah. Even if you choose to reject me, even if you choose to leave me totally devastated and heart-broken by opting not to marry me, I'd like to wish you the best of luck with your search for a new spouse and your battle against cancer.
Keep fighting the good fight!
Selome
What can I say? What a sweetheart. Not only does she have a warm heart, she has a sense of humor. (And she's gorgeous, from the photo, which I am not going to post here.)
Selome--Thank you for your sense of fun, and for your strong criticism of the U.S. government, which is what this is all about, really.
@ Jeanne Sather 2007.
I cried reading her response. It's powerful in so many ways. She is wise and yet young She's our future and I hope her voice resonates among many.

I just went to her blog and was reading some of the comments. It's amazing how privileged, self serving and how so many folks project a "sense of entitlement" when BORN into a wealthy country. Being born into a country with good perks is NOT a right but a LUXURY. When someone shoots off the mouth about "don't come to my country and abuse the benefits" I just roll my eyes. I'm sure most people would like to stay in the country they are born in and absorb, nurture and relish in their native culture. But it's simply NOT possible to thrive in some countries. Those born into politically, socially and economically "healthy/stable" countries take it for granted that they have access to a decent education, health care and capitalistic opportunities. When in a challenging situation it is the opportunist and survivor that goes wherever the hell they need to go to get what's best for them and I commend all immigrants to ANY country for thriving and going after what they want and often what they NEED! I'm going to have to quote Jeanne's friend Jeff here because I share his sentiment: "For those of you who think Jeanne is in poor taste, go to hell or write her a check. More than 50% of bankruptcies in this country are due to health care costs. And we call ourselves civilized."
Onward Jeanne!!!
