Carrots for Breakfast

This is what I ate for breakfast this morning: fresh baby carrots from my garden, just rinsed under the hose. I ate them outside as I did my usual morning putter in the garden.
You may notice that the carrots are different colors: red, white, yellow, and orange. That was something new this year—I bought a packet of seeds called the “carrot rainbow blend” from Ed Hume.
I’ve been blogging quite a bit about gardening, because gardening is one of the things that keeps me sane and happy during this crazy life with cancer. For me, the benefits of gardening are exercise, stress reduction, and delicious, nutritious food.
More on gardening.
Carrots and Cancer
And then there’s the whole carrots and cancer issue. Actually, it’s not much of an issue. There’s plenty of evidence that carrots help reduce your risk of getting various types of cancer. So along with that “apple a day” you might want to add a carrot or two a day to your diet.
It’s not clear that carrots help prevent cancer recurrence, but good nutrition is still important—perhaps even MORE important—for those of us who already have cancer.

Friday morning's breakfast: more carrots, pea pods, and strawberries, all fresh from the garden. How nutritious is that? Plus about three cups of coffee. I ate up in the garden in the sky and watched the neighborhood from the backside--the alley side. Always more interesting than the street side.

Sounds like sheer pleasure. Yeah, yeah, yeah; nutrition. The fact is, there are few things as purely enjoyable as ripe produce fresh out of your own garden, or fresh in it.
Still, my true love is picking up dinner right now, and your post reminded me to ask him for some organic carrot juice. So delicious, but also, when I drink it, I fancy that I can feel all my cells being washed. Feels fantastic.

I LOVE carrot juice. I wonder if I could make my own? No. 1: need to grow enough carrots. No. 2: need a juicer. Sounds so good, though.

fresh (homemade) carrot juice is fantastic! toss in just a little bit of apple and its certainly dessert. yes, juicers are cumbersome, (not to mention expensive) but can be worth the treat. wonder if a friend has one you could borrow? or a little friendly juicing get-together? you could call it BYOP, for bring your own produce. YUM!

Great idea--a juicing party! I'm pretty sure one of my neighbors has one. I'll ask around. More raw carrots for breakfast this morning.

Hi Jeanne,
Thanks for stopping by my blog and letting me know about your gardening category. I missed that before and it was nice to see someone articulate so well the benefits of gardening. I love your pictures. Best wishes, Carver
