Get a Boycott October Button

Sick of pink ribbons, pink tomato soup, pink Tictacs, pink ribbon toilet paper, and Breast Cancer Barbie?

Join the boycott of October, 2007.

Just e-mail me your mailing address (jeanne.sather@gmail.com) and I will send you a button, absolutely free. I will also send you a flier that you can copy and hand out to anyone who asks about your button. It will explain why you are asking them to boycott pink products and what they can do instead to help women with breast cancer.

The buttons will be pink (yes, pink. It’s the "fight fire with fire" principle) and say “Boycott October,” and then in smaller type: “Don’t buy pink products. Don’t exploit women with breast cancer.”

The buttons will be mailed out in September 2007.

Excellent! Finally a way to symbolize the distration from meaningful changes... like universal healthcare, statutory/ins regs requiring coverage for oncology services and treatment. Wonder how many women's cancer doctor visits and treatments, Dr. Bill Frist (and the rest of HMO fatcat family) could afford to fund?

Yeah... I think I need a button. Write on, Jeanne.

This is a great idea! I applaud your willingness to confront those who prefer us to all weep with gratitude every time some misguided soul buys a pink lid container of Yoplait.

Thanks! You made me laugh: "weep with gratitude everytime someone buys a pink Yoplait"!

Indeed.

I think 2007 is going to be the year of the Big Backlash. Last year, the focus shifted to where the money was going, and how much was actually being donated, which was good, but not good enough. 2007 will be the year that women with breast cancer say, Stop exploiting me!

Jeanne

With some what timidness of being "exploited" for supporting BC and yes some pink things, I have to say the pink ribbons brought more attention to the fight of BC than the red ribbons did for Aids.
I can see where some BC people would be put out by the "pink mania", but there are still those of us that display this color for awarness. I walk in the AVON walk which raises a significant amount that goes to BC. Of course it takes a lot of money to advertise and put on these events. But 74-76% goes directly to BC. My "Pink" has made my friends and customers aware and they have given generously. I made some Pink to wear as I trained and had people stop and contribute, to stop and hug. I have met people who had treatments paid by AVON. I see the growing concern for BC people about exploitation, however, there are still many unaware of how many are affected by this disease. There are still many that do not have testing. There are still many that do not understand the destruction. I thought about abandoning my efforts for some are offended by Pin. But then I think of those who contributed to a source that will fund mammagrams, research, treatments. Their precious dollars could be spent elsewhere. I do not purchase products for BC donations, however, I do purchase products to eploit awarness, not people. It was silently unspeakable for too long.
The yellow ribbons for our troops have also brought national attention. It warms my heart to see this one.
I wish you well in your crusade. I am sorry it sorrows and offends some BC people. I am sorry some use it as a sales gimmick. I for one will focus on the positive aspects of Pink.
